Change Your Work Space with a Standing Desk
by Kenny Rhoads
Two features are essential for a good workbench: efficient function and sturdy safety. A height adjustable sit to standing desk offers advantages for both features compared to a conventional work bench that you might buy. They are just as sturdy but deliver improved, ergonomic safety, and they are more flexible when you need them to be, for a functionality you can take advantage of more easily.
Most workbenches are at a comfortable standing height that gives you space to bench over your work just a bit, to give you more control when working with powerful tools and heavy materials. Every such workbench much have this basic level of functionality. But this fixed-height bench isn’t ideal for all the different kinds of work and projects you might want to do in a garage, and in general it can be unhealthy to spend an entire day standing.
Adjustable height standing desk workbenches go beyond this basic functionality to address these shortcomings, and in so doing, offer improved safety. For example, many projects work out better if you sketch out your plans and keep track of all the measurements you need as you cut and connection components. Sitting often makes these tasks easier, which is why you see tall chairs in garages to give people the option of a seated workbench when they want it. A convertible-height desk gives you the ability to move to a seated position whenever you want. This is also useful when you really need to get a lot of your body over something you’re working on. A desk that is at waist-height or a bit taller lets you do this so you can apply the right amount of pressure to get the job done. And the whole time it protects your back by helping you set the best height for safety and comfort.
As far as efficient function, with an adjustable height sit stand garage workbench, you don’t sacrifice any of the core functionality. It’s just as stable, sturdy, and durable, and doesn’t take up extra wall space, so you can still organize and store your tools efficiently. However, it does gives you access to a wider range of uses, as mentioned above. It also enables you to have a full-size workbench in a garage with limited space, because you can adjust the table to its lower height when not in use. This flexibility can enable you to continue using your garage for other purposes, maybe even storing things against the way above the desk, and then converting the space to a work area with a full height bench when you need it.
Getting more from the same space and furniture while increasing your safety and health is a tall order, but that’s what an adjustable height standing workbench can do.
