Reduce Your Chance of Obesity with a Standing Desk
by Kenny Rhoads
Ever wonder why more Americans are obese these days? Certainly some reasons are general lack of exercise and calorie-rich diets. Yet, there is a little known culprit contributing to increasingly more obesity these days and that is astronomical amounts of time sitting at a conventional office desk. A smart alternative would be to use an l shaped standing desk, electric adjustable height standing desk, or a manual standing desk but first things first.
Why get fat from a desk?
Numerous studies indicate that too much sitting is a specific cause of weight gain. As it turns out, a key enzyme called lipase burns body fat and lipase literally clicks off while sitting. On the other hand, while standing lipase is always ‘on’. Ergo, using an electric adjustable height standing desk where you can stand and alter your work position, at will, can re-engage lipase activity. How does lipase work; what does it do in the body?
Sitting engages far fewer muscles, while standing engages far more. It is this muscle engagement that triggers lipase production, which in turn processes fat and cholesterol. Further, the longer the body is sitting, the slower the metabolism, which also lowers the good cholesterol, HDL, which protects arteries from the bad cholesterol. In addition, standing gobbles up blood sugar and triglycerides that inhibits diabetes development.
Can I get slim from a desk?
All things being unequal, a desk alone will not drop a massive amount of pounds since diet is always a factor. However, research has found that individuals who have made no diet changes but transitioned to an electric adjustable height standing desk which allows them to stand while working improves their health and helps them lose weight—as much as 20 pounds annually.
Moving the body
Further, it’s more than just standing to work at a computer that helps burn the fat; it’s also more movement that results as a natural outcome of standing. Standing burns an additional 60 calories an hour more than just sitting. And when a person stands, he/she is far more likely to move around a bit, shifting weight from one leg to another, turning to look out the window, extending or stretching arms and legs or moving the neck.
Consequently, medical experts suggest moving around to stay healthy, trimmer and more fit even if you do computer work much of the day. Just standing 5 to 10 minutes each hour reduces fatigue, engages lipase and otherwise energizes blood flow and gets the body in motion. Using an electric adjustable height desk encourages greater physical motion while reducing the risk of life-threatening diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and strokes.
